Farm History
Rietfontein has a rich history that dates back to 1838 when it was purchased by the Van der Merwe family. For over 150 years, the farm remained in the family before being sold in 1989 to the late Willie van Zyl, from whom it was later reacquired.
A LEGACY OF GENERATIONS
The story of Rietfontein begins with Carel Petrus (CP) van der Merwe, who started farming here with horses and Merino sheep. It was CP who built the original Manor House, which still stands today, and planted the vineyard in front of it. Though the grape variety is unknown, it remains a symbol of the farm’s heritage.
The farm was later passed down to CP’s son, Willem Jacobus (WJ) van der Merwe, who raised 10 daughters and 3 sons here. Among them, JCH van der Merwe, the next generation, carried on the family tradition of farming at Rietfontein.
TRANSITION & GROWTH
In the early 1960s, JCH van der Merwe, together with his brothers, transformed the farm’s operations. They constructed the large dam, enabling a shift from primarily livestock farming to a mixed farming enterprise with fruit, vegetables, and livestock.
The Manor House has been central to Rietfontein’s story, serving various roles through the years. In 1946, a gabled house was built nearby, which tragically burned down in 1963 but was restored by JCH in 1965. Over the years, the Manor House transitioned from a family home to an office space and later underwent further restoration under Willie van Zyl’s ownership.
A FARM MOVING FORWARD
Purchased by Robert Graaff of Graaff Fruit in 2013, Rietfontein has evolved into a high-performing production unit in the heart of the Koue Bokkeveld. The farm now boasts over 230 hectares of fruit orchards, producing apples, pears, nectarines, and cherries, as well as 20 hectares of premium wine grapes supplied to De Grendel. The historic Manor House has recently been renovated into a refined guest retreat, offering visitors a blend of modern comfort and countryside charm.
Under the expert management of Christi van den Heever—Agri Western Cape Young Farmer of the Year 2023—and his dedicated team, Rietfontein continues to grow from strength to strength.
